Rufus Wainwright: My memory of a ‘Prima Donna’
I’ve been a fan of Rufus Wainwright since a free CD of his music landed in my goodie bag at an NYC Pride in the late-90s. Since then, I’ve run into him a few times. Each time he was really nowhere close to a “Prima Donna.” The most memorable time for me was the night we knocked into each other at the now-shuttered East Village, NYC gay bar, Cock.
Famous for its illicit backroom orgies in the Giuliani-era, you either landed in the orgy or you were a spectator. That night, Rufus and me were spectators. I just looked over and he was standing next to me. The funny part was that earlier that week, my friend fainted at his show. Wainwright had to stop the concert and scream at everyone to allow us to leave the floor. He was happy to have met me, since he had no idea what happened to the fallen fan and whether that person was OK. (by the way, hottie Paul Rudd of “Clueless,” “Knocked Up,” etc., stood next to me at the concert. I lit his cig and we were packed together so tightly, I felt his breath on my neck. Hot! Oh, and my friend was fine, too.) Rufus and I small-talked for a bit more and then split up.
The other times I ran into him was when my company sponsored his show in San Diego in 2003 and that same year at the Sunset Junction music festival in Silver Lake, CA.
So, I’m excited to see ‘Prima Donna,’ the documentary of Wainwright’s entre into classical opera. It promises to tell me much more than I could learn in the few minutes I stood next to him at Cock and gives us a better understanding of the genius behind his music as a whole. Check out the trailer below.
“Prima Donna” premieres tonight, Mon. Dec. 21 at 9PM. For more exclusive videos click here and click here for more showings on Sundance.
